ABOUT

About Us

Whether you need a cosy bed, a tent pitch, or just a hot drink and cake, we're here for you.

Siobhan and Neil Urquhart

Having lived around England and abroad with Neil's military and school careers, we feel very lucky to have found The Old Mill.  Sitting in the quiet Candy Valley, about 3 miles outside of Oswestry in North Shropshire, usually all we can hear are birds, sheep and the River Morda, which borders the northen edge of our land. We want to share this with others, and have set up the sort of informal, relaxed bed and breakfast and small off-grid campsite at which we would like to stay - and hope you will too.  The Old Mill is still very much a family house - with Siobhan's mother, Iris, in the "Grannexe", and our adult children coming and going.

The Old Mill is in the beautiful and peaceful Candy Valley, about 3 miles outside of Oswestry.

We have an assortment of our own dogs, who are kept away from guest areas as much as possible.  We will occasionally take guest dogs, but only with prior agreement.  Service dogs are, of course, always welcome.

To find out more about The Old Mill or to make a booking, please go to the Contact Page or use the chat button.  We look forward to hearing from you.

Breakfast

We offer a range of cereals, fruit and yoghurt, and then you can either opt for a full cooked breakfast, or a selection of pastries - whatever you need to get you going for a day of walking or sightseeing

A cooked breakfast including bacon and sausages

Packed Lunches

We can provide packed lunches for those of you walking Offa's Dyke - these usually consist of a sandwich, a piece of cake, a packet of crisps, a carton of juice and fruit.  You can fill up a flask with a hot drink before you go too.

Wet Kit

We know the misery of putting on wet boots and coats in the morning - we will dry your kit overnight, to make that start a bit more comfortable.

Alcohol

We are licensed to sell alcohol to our guests, and have a small range of locally sourced wines and locally made beers, cider and spirits available.

The Campsite

The Campsite

We have an unashamedly simple campsite from April to October, for a few tents and (small) campervans.  The vans will park on the first field, and any cars must be left there too, but you can pitch your tent wherever you like.  Our land is bordered on one side by the River Morda and there are also some small ponds and almost hidden streams around, so take care.

Facilities - cold water tap, loo, portable shower if required.  Campers also have use of the Kettle House, where you can sit inside, help yourself to hot drinks and charge your phone.

Pitches are £10 for a tent + 1 person, and £5 for additional people.

Food and Drink - as well as the Kettle House we offer baked potatoes with fillings for a warm evening meal (£6.50/person) and egg and bacon rolls for breakfast (£3.50/person).

Please keep all bbqs off the ground -  we would prefer you do not use a single use disposable bbq, so you can hire one if necessary.

The Kettle House

The Kettle House

As walkers ourselves, we know the relief of finding somewhere to sit down and have a hot drink, particularly on a wet day.

In the Kettle House, as well as fresh cold water, there is, not surprisingly, a kettle.  Along with tea, coffee and hot chocolate - please help yourself and make a brew using one of our mugs (don't worry - we'll wash it up) or fill up your flask.

For more supplies, there is the Trefonen Post Office and Shop, just a mile south of us on the ODP.
